Prince Miklos of Gasmei shortly before his defection.
Born the third son of Emperor Valdemar VII of Gasmei. Young Miklos was raised by the Warrior-Priests of Rehanni, God of War, and was expected to go into the temple and become one of their number. But as he grew into a young man, he noticed the excess around him. Even the warriors of the temple were spending their days in debauchery and gluttony, wasting their bodies and minds. The glorious Gasmeian Empire was already falling into ruins.
At the age of nineteen, as the drawn out war between the Empire and Hoi-Na and their allies began, Miklos, having gathered a small band of followers who also wished to leave the opressive wreck of the Empire, fled west into the Irisandri desert.
While in Irisandri, Miklos and his followers stayed for a time near the Tribali, the tribe who kept the religious knowledge of the peoples of the Irisandri. At the same time, the prince fell deeply in love with a young princess and priestess named Ameera. Any romantic relationship was out of the question, due to social strictures and Ameera's religious vows. However, the two ignored this and became involved.
When this was discovered, Miklos and his followers fled with Ameera now in their party. A son, Farzi, was born to the couple shortly after they arrived in Gasmei. The entire group traveled for several years, going from the Zari jungle (where a second young son, Roland, disappeared) to the early Hoi-Na Empire.
Finally, Miklos and Ameera and their people settled in the Mountains of Sorrow in eastern Adaven. It was this group which began to stitch the loose confederation of village groups into one people. Thus Miklos and Ameera were the ancestors of Shimon Defris, the first king of Adaven.
